Manchin campaign offers
all West Virginians a voice

As a retired plant manager for Lockheed Clarksburg, I have never been involved in a state political campaign before, but on Feb. 27, I attended a meeting in Flatwoods about the future of West Virginia. This meeting was something absolutely new for me. This meeting was a grassroots effort to recruit Joe Manchin to run for Governor.
How I became informed of this meeting was through a newspaper ad. It informed me of a grassroots effort that is sweeping across the state. I simply mailed back the completed ad, and I received a letter from Mike Jones, one of the organizers of this effort, telling me of the meeting and to come to Flatwoods.
Needless to say, I went to the meeting simply because I was curious about what would happen. Would this meeting be full of standard political promises or would this grassroots meeting be something more and perhaps, something really different?
I was pleasantly surprised! The “Recruit Joe Manchin, Governor 2000” effort is one in which the people will determine the direction of the campaign. Many counties were represented with concerned citizens who want more than lip service about how our state is going to move forward. We all filled out questionnaires asking US what we thought were the major issues facing our state. I found out that these questionnaires will be compiled, and this will help dictate Joe Manchin’s course on the campaign trail in 2000, should he decide to run. During a break in the meeting, I asked Mike Jones, a lifelong friend of Joe’s, if Joe was going to run. He said with a big smile “I am 98 percent sure Joe Manchin will run for Governor.” I also found out that Joe Manchin will be traveling throughout the state visiting all of the grassroots committees and distributing the same questionnaires so every West Virginian can have a say. This is very refreshing to know that no West Virginian will be left behind in deciding what the issues will be.
For the first time in my life, regarding state politics, I am truly excited about what I have seen and heard. I am convinced. I support the “Recruit Joe Manchin, Governor 2000” effort 100 percent. Come to the upcoming meetings and see for yourself why West Virginia does indeed need Joe Manchin as our next governor.
