WVU seeks grants for research park

West Virginia University is seeking $10 million from the state to develop a research park on the old poultry farm site. School officials say that it will create approximately 2,600 jobs.

Traficant gets eight years in prison
He will run for re-election from behind bars

CLEVELAND (AP) — Expelled from Congress a week ago, an unrepentant James A. Traficant Jr. was sentenced to eight years behind bars for corruption Tuesday and made it clear he intends to run for re-election from his prison cell — and expects to win.

Reviled racist dead at 68

  HILLSBORO, W.Va. (AP) — In the lush, misty hills of Pocahontas County, where fence posts outnumber people and folks mostly keep to themselves, William Pierce kept a low profile his followers struggle to maintain. 
Pierce, a white supremacist leader and founder of the National Alliance, died Tuesday of cancer. He was 68.

University of Mississippi:Miners’ teamwork saved their lives
eamwork and hope helped to save the nine trapped miners in Pennsylvania.
With each day since news that nine coal miners were trapped 240 feet below the surface in extreme conditions, the country watched and read the news from Pennsylvania. With each passing day, many in the country lost hope that any of the miners would be rescued alive. The miners had accidentally drilled into an abandoned mine filled with water late Wednesday night.

Big East football notebook
Miami unanimous preseason favorite

With fall practice beginning on  Aug. 4, it’s time to take a glance at the Big East conference following media day last Wednesday in East Rutherford, N.J. 
Miami was once again picked to win the league crown, as all 24 media members that were present picked the Hurricanes as the top team. It was the eighth time in 10 years Miami was selected as the preseason favorite.
