Senior superback Avon Cobourne has been selected by a committee as one of eight semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award.
The award is presented annually to the nation’s top running back. Cobourne currently ranks fifth in the nation in total rushing yards, and 15th in touchdowns. With last night’s performance against Virginia Tech,  Cobourne moved to 13th in all-time rushing for Division I running backs.
The award will be presented Dec. 2 at the Home Depot College Awards Show.

For  her impressive showing at last weekend’s NCAA regional competition, Megan Metcalf has been named WVU’s Athlete of the Week.
In the 6,000-meter race, Metcalf captured the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. The NCAA Championships will be held this weekend at Indiana State University.

The Mountaineer men’s and women’s swim teams both collected wins last weekend against Seton Hall.
Winners on the afternoon included Kleyton Franca, Thomas Fletcher, Kristen Moffatt, Ryan Faught, Brian Donahue, Pedro Pinto, Can Eter, Devlyn Quinn, Ashley Bissett, Lee Ann Johnston and Olga Tzinker.
Both teams’ next meet will take place Dec. 5-7, in South Bend, Ind., when they swim in the Notre Dame Invitational.

Because of two Big East games in the middle of the week (WVU-VT, Miami-Pitt), only three conference teams see action Saturday. Boston College visits Temple for a noon affair, while Rutgers tries to pull off an upset at Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
