Homeland security bill close to passing

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate defeated an attempt by Democrats to kill what they called special interests measures in a homeland security bill, bringing a lame-duck Congress close to granting President Bush’s demand for a new Cabinet agency to protect Americans from terrorists.

Lawmakers urged not to rush to judgment on deficit

CHARLESTON (AP) — The so-called second injury fund, recent premium cuts for employers and some court rulings all likely helped pump up the deficit in the state’s workers’ compensation program to an estimated $2.4 billion, officials said.
‘‘My belief is, we’re going to find multiple causes for increases in costs,’’ Bureau of Employment Programs Commissioner Robert Smith said Tuesday. ‘‘To say it’s just the court’s fault, I’m not prepared to say that. I think we need to look deeper than that.’’

Bush administration should  clearly address what it means by an Iraqi breach of  compliance

s reported Tuesday, Iraq said it will meet the demands of a recent United Nations Security Council resolution and provide weapons inspectors with unfettered access to all biological, chemical, nuclear and missile files the country possesses.
We should all be glad the diplomatic process is still in effect, instead of an all-out war with Iraq.
