Terror alert level raised to second-highest level

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration raised the nationwide terror alert to its second-highest level, closed nine U.S. embassies overseas and heightened security at federal buildings and landmarks in America as new intelligence warned of car bombings, suicide attacks and other strikes linked to the 9/11 anniversary.

Remember what was truly lost on Sept. 11 
:45 a.m.: Pilots Jim Ogonowski and Tom McGuinness, possibly killed before impact — may not have to witness American Airlines Flight 11 — hijacked by Mohammed Atta and his cohorts, begin a day of terror unlike any other in American history. Folks drinking their morning coffee at work in the North Tower of the World Trade Center are either killed instantly, see the plane headed toward the building, or feel rumbling similar to an earthquake.Various companies of the New York City Police and Fire Departments head to the scene. Before long, the second tower is hit even more severely, the U.S. Army sector of the Pentagon is hit, heroic passengers are believed to have brought down United Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pa., and the towers collapse.

In the Rhododendron Room at the Mountainlair last night, students could be heard exchanging their reasons for being among the crowd. Most were there only because their generous English teachers promised them extra credit. By the end of the night  however, it seemed that extra credit wasn’t the only thing being received.
