Students should practice caution during the coming summer months Every semester, as the year winds down and the temperatures begin to rise, so does the mayhem. This year has been no different. In a recent article in The Daily Athenaeum, DPS reported an increase in the use of alcohol on campus that directly coincided with the number of students outside. Cpt. David Bean, of the Morgantown Fire Department, also reported an increase in couch fires, saying, “We anticipate more.” The situation surrounding the disappearance of Justin Hayduk has left many students questioning their safety on the streets of Morgantown at night. So has the number of sexual assaults that have been reported on campus recently, prompting DPS to increase patrols. Students should remember that they themselves are ultimately in charge of their personal safety, despite taking such precautions as going out in groups or sticking with a close friend. And as students migrate from Morgantown to other parts of the state, nation and globe, they should also remember that these risks are everywhere, not just in the University city. The warm weather of summer entices many to be out and about, but simultaneously increases the incidents of accidents and other unexpected occurrences as well. Yes, summertime is fun, but not when you become part of a crime statistic. It’s a warning you have heard before, but that doesn’t make it any less important. So be safe, be smart and have a great summer.
