The Kappa Alpha fraternity became the first fraternity to win all four West Virginia University Greek awards during last weekend’s annual Greek Programming Committee’s Greek Awards Banquet.
The KAs won the Homecoming Competition, Mountaineer Week, the Greek Week Competition and the Most Outstanding Chapter award according to former chapter president Brian Jenkins.
“We had a lot of participation,” he said. “We just had a drive to prove to everyone that we could be the best.”
Jenkins said that the Homecoming Competition is the biggest Greek event of year and all alumni return to WVU for the event. Different Greek games are held, including a song and dance competition, homecoming float and the “Survivor” competition, based on the CBS television show.
“The Most Outstanding Chapter Award basically ... consists of community service hours, educational programs, leadership programs, faculty involvement, community service, participation in Greek events and philanthropy,” Jenkins said. He added that there was a 50-page application for the award.
Mountaineer Week is sponsored by the University, he said. Activities include a beard-growing competition, country karaoke, a PRT cram, a turkey calling contest and a canned food drive. Greek members also attended University-sponsored lectures each day.
Greek week also featured games and competitions, including a clothing drive, a decade-oriented fashion show and a self-choreographed dance. Community service composed another part of the competition.
“It’s the first time we’ve won it as a chapter,” Jenkins said. “It’s the first time that anyone in the history of the Greek system has won all four major events in one year. We have the best chapter on campus.”
