Gibson added to staff

West Virginia’s coaching staff grew by one on Tuesday as Tony Gibson was named an assistant coach. Head coach Rich Rodriguez announced Gibson was being promoted from a graduate assistant, a position he’s held since January, to a secondary coach. He has been working with the safeties daily in practice.
Gibson played for Rodriguez at Glenville State College as a defensive back from 1991-94, where he was part of two WVIAC championship teams. The native of Van, W.Va., was a three-sport letterman at Van High School. Gibson also began his coaching career in West Virginia at Gilmer County High School, where he was the head coach and athletic director. In 1996, Gibson joined Rodriguez’s staff at Glenville, coaching the defensive backs and kickoff teams.
From 1997-98, Gibson was the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Cumberland University, where he also coached the special teams. The defense was ranked first in the Mid-South Conference both seasons. He was defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at West Virginia Tech during the 1999-2000 seasons.
