For a long time, I thought being from West Virginia was socially questionable at best. Let’s face it— pop culture provides few favorable cultural representations of anyone who lives between New York and L.A. It seems like kids are either taught to embody the Appalachian stereotype, or edit out every part of them that reflects their rural roots. Only recently have I been able to come to peace with my “heritage.” What did it for me was this simple realization: we’re better musicians.
