by Stephanie Taylor ATHENAEUM STAFF Founded just two years after the bloodiest war in the
history of the United States, West Virginia University, originally called
the Agricultural College of West Virginia, was plagued by the politics
of the pro-North Radical Republicans and the pro-South Democrats during
its early years.
CHICAGO (AP) -- Nikia Roberson thought it would be the
perfect grand entrance.
by Melinda Young ATHENAEUM STAFF World War II fighting may never have touched Morgantown

A message (or apology) from our city editor
by Sean Michael McCarthy ATHENAEUM STAFF It was Thursday, December 30, 1999, and I had just returned
from Shepherdstown to see the mind teaser Being John Malkovich. I got home
and decided to get up at 4:00 a.m. the following morning in order to celebrate
the first New Year celebration at 5:00 a.m. in the Pacific. The events
that unfolded in the next 36 hours left me exhausted and hung over, but
the experience was one that I will never forget.

with the opinion of my chronically incorrect coworker. All the Millenium
lists are unnecessary. Great conversation pieces? Sure. Great indicators?
Hardly.
