Memoir of the global New Year party

It was Thursday, December 30, 1999, and I had just returned from Shepherdstown to see the mind teaser Being John Malkovich. I got home and decided to get up at 4:00 a.m. the following morning in order to celebrate the first New Year celebration at 5:00 a.m. in the Pacific. The events that unfolded in the next 36 hours left me exhausted and hung over, but the experience was one that I will never forget.
